  • Description

JAPAN'S MAJOR SOCIALIST PARTIES AND TRADE UNIONS ORGANISED AN ANTI-AMERICAN RALLY IN TOKYO YESTERDAY, (MONDAY). A CROWD OF 10,000 GATHERED IN HIBIYA PARK TO HEAR SPEECHES DENOUNCING U.S. POLICIES IN VIETNAM.

SPEAKERS AT THE RALLY DEMANDED THAT U.S. AIRCRAFT SHOULD IMMEDIATELY STOP BOMBING RAIDS ON NORTH VIETNAM AND PEACE TALKS SHOULD BEGIN. A RESOLUTION WAS ADOPTED THAT JAPAN SHOULD REFUSE THE USE OF AIRFIELDS TO U.S. AIRCRAFT EN ROUTE TO VIETNAM.

A LARGE CONTINGENT OF POLICE PREVENTED THE RALLY MARCHING ON THE U.S. EMBASSY TO PRESENT THEIR PETITION TO THE U.S. AMBASSADOR TO JAPAN, DR. REISCHAUER. POLICE TRUCKS AND ARMOURED CARS REINFORCED 5,000 POLICEMEN.

DEMONSTRATORS REFUSED TO MOVE AND ABOUT 10,000 JAPANESE JAMMED SURROUNDING STREETS AS POLICE TRIED HARD TO BREAK UP THE GATHERING. TEN PEOPLE ARE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN ARRESTED FOR OBSTRUCTING TRAFFIC, BRINGING THE TOTAL ARRESTS DURING THE DAY TO 22 -- THE OTHERS WERE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY EARLIER IN THE DAY DURING A SIT-DOWN STRIKE OUTSIDE THE U.S. EMBASSY.
