In Denpasar, Bali, Khrushchev accompanied by President Sukarno, his foreign Minister Gromyko and other Indonesian leaders watch a folklore procession. The Soviet leader obtained first hand experience of the customs in Bali, depicted in a series of decorated floats where ceremonies were held for the benefit of the visitor. There were floats depicting all rituals in a human's life in this isolated outpost of Hinduism, where the ancient Indian customs are still observed with little change from the motherland of Hinduism. They depicted ceremonies before child birth, where a mother far advanced in pregnancy listens to her husband reading the Hindu epic Ramayana. Then came the ceremonies after birth where tom toma announced the arrival of a healthy child. There were also ceremonies for 42nd day of birth and various other stages of life; the wedding; the wedding feast, initiation to priesthood and finally the cremation.
Then came hundreds of Balinese belles glamorously dressed in bright yellow, red and blue sarongs interwoven with gold and silver thread carrying fragrant flowers in a bowl in the right hand and swaying rhythmically to the haunting music of Balinese orchestra. They swayed past the decorated stand where the Soviet and Indonesian leaders were seated, displaying their charm and choreographic talents. At the end of the performance, a few dancers presented Khrushchev with a badge and pennant (not in picture).
