    Monsignor Joseph Albert Malula, Archbishop of Kinshasa, returned there last week from Rome where he was formally installed as the first Congolese Cardinal on April 28th.

    The new cardinal was greeted at the airport by the Governor of Kinshasa, M. Nauwelaerts, the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs responsible for co-operation, M. Loliki, and the Deputy Minister for Secondary Education, M. Mabolia.

    Welcoming Monsignor Malula M. Nauwelaerts spoke of the joy honour which the nation had felt at his appointment.

    Later Monsignor Malula drove in a motorcade through the streets of Kinshasa to Mount Stanley, the official residence of the head of state, where he set President Joseph Mobutu.

    Born in 1917 Monsignor Malula was ordained in 1946 and has been Archbishop of his diocese for nearly five years.
