  • Description

After receiving threats of violence from urban guerrillas, the Ford Motor Company's Argentine affiliate this week started distributing food to impoverished shanty towns. The guerrillas said they would carry out their threats unless the company spent one million dollars (GBP400,000 sterling) on social welfare.
The Marxist People's Revolutionary Army, which has claimed responsibility for a series of kidnappings in Argentina, said the Ford company would be subject to attacks and kidnappings if it did not meet demands.
A total of eleven impoverished villages and shanty towns were receiving food distributed by the Ford company. The company is also providing money for two children's hospitals and has started the production of ambulances in Ford factories.
SYNOPSIS: At a shanty town outside Buenos Aires, an impoverished population waited for the free distribution of food on Tuesday. It was one of a number of social welfare projects undertaken by the Argentine subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company -- under the threat of violence from an urban guerrilla group.
Father Mujica, a revolutionary who lives among the people of Argentinean shanty towns, had been asked to supervise the distribution. He was helped by members of the Peronist youth movement. Earlier, the Marxist People's Revolutionary Army had warned that the Ford company would be subject to attacks and kidnappings unless it spent one million dollars on social welfare. Ten other poor villages and shanty towns were to receive food. In addition money was being spent on two children's hospitals and on building ambulances at Ford company plants.
