"Giant-Killer" Jun Kamiwazumi of Japan was eliminated form the French tennis championships in Paris on Friday (7 June) by the West German, Jurgen Fassbender. The 26-year-old Japanese professional was not able to produce the form which knocked Stan Smith out of the tourney in the first round on Thursday (6 June).
Fassbender defeated Kaniwazumi 6-2, 7-6. On Thursday Kamiwazumi downed six-seeded Smith 3-6, 6-4, 8-6. He played tenaciously, holding off determined come-back attempts by the American. Kamiwazumi said it was the first time he'd played Smith, and he was very nervous before he went into the match.
But Kamiwazumi wasn't given much, chance of defeating Fassbender. After a slow start in the first set, he returned playing well in the second to force the score to 7-6.
The Japanese player has been unable to play at home since in turned professional. He, his wife Yuki and baby daughter, Aiko, are touring the world this year. He hopes the tour will improve his skill and confidence.
