    THE EAST AFRICAN SAFARI - THE WORLD'S TOUGHEST MOTOR RALLY - WAS WON BY A FORD CORTINA DRIVEN BY PETER HUGHES AND BILLY YOUNG OF KENYA. FORD CORTINA'S ALSO WON THE TEAM CLASSIFICATION IN THE 3,180 MILE (5132 KMS) RALLY WHICH STRETCHES THROUGH THREE COUNTRIES OVER SOME OF THE WORLD'S WORST ROADS.

    A SWEDISH SAAB DRIVEN BY ERIK CARLSSON WAS SECOND AND ANOTHER FORD CORTINA DRIVEN BY MIKE ARMSTRONG AND CHRIS BATES, OF KENYA, CAME THIRD, ALTHOUGH IT ARRIVED AHEAD OF THE SAAB.

    PEUGEOTS WERE AWARDED SECOND PLACE IN THE TEAM CLASSIFICATION WITH SAABS THIRD. ONE OF THE SAAB DRIVERS WAS CARLSSON'S WIFE, PAT MOSS. SHE WAS PLACED TENTH IN THE OVERALL CLASSIFICATION.

    THE WINNING CORTINA HAD 63 PENALTY POINTS. CARLSSON'S SAAB HAD 74, AND THE SECOND CORTINA, 80.

    OF THE FIRST 10 IN THE OVERALL CLASSIFICATION THREE WERE FORD-CORTINAS - FIRST THIRD AND EIGHT; TWO WERE SAABS - SECOND AND TENTH TWO WERE PEUGEOTS - FOURTH AND NINTH; TWO MERCEDES - FIFTH AND SEVENTH; AND ONE ZODIAC WHICH WAS PLACED SIXTH.
