  • Description

THE CANADIAN COASTGUARD SERVICE HAS ADDED A HOVERCRAFT TO ITS EQUIPMENT FOR USE IN SEARCH AND RESCUE WORK. THE HOVERCRAFT, AN SR-N5, BUILT BY THE BRITISH HOVERCRAFT CORPORATION, SUPPLEMENTS A FLEET OF AIRCRAFT, SHIPS, ICE-BREAKERS AND HELICOPTERS WHICH HAVE ALREADY BEEN IN OPERATION WITH THE SERVICE FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS.

THE HOVERCRAFT HAS NOW GONE INTO SERVICE ON CANADA'S WEST COAST. IT IS EQUIPPED WITH FIRE-FIGHTING APPLIANCES, PUMPS FOR ASSISTING DAMAGED VESSELS, SCRAMBLE NETS AND TWO 21-MAN INFLATABLE LIFE RAFTS. ITS CREW OF THREE -- A PILOT, NAVIGATOR AND A SEAMAN -- IS AIDED BY THE MOST UP-TO-DATE NAVIGATION AND COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT.

INSIDE, THE HOVERCRAFT HAS BEEN RE-FITTED TO PROVIDE AMPLE SPACE FOR ANY DEMANDS WHICH MIGHT ARISE DURING AN EMERGENCY WHILE AT THE SAME TIME PROVIDING GOOD ACCOMMODATION FOR THE CREW.

THE VESSEL HAS A MAXIMUM SPEED OF 60 KNOTS (111KM AN HOUR) AND CAN CLEAR WAVES AT A HEIGHT OF 4.5 FEET (1.37 METRES) AND CAN CLEAR OBSTACLES 3.5 FEET (1 METRE) HIGH.

DURING RECENT TRAINING EXERCISES, THE COAST GUARD HAS CARRIED OUT A NUMBER OF TRIAL 'RESCUE' OPERATIONS.
