  • Description

Bangladesh - one of the world's most overcrowded and impoverished nations - is having its first national census since 1961.

More than ten thousand government "enumerators" began numbering the nations millions on 10 february and are expected to complete the task next Thursday (21 February 1974).

The last census gave the country, then East Pakistan, a population of about seventy five million with an average density of almost one and a half thousand per square mile - one of the highest in the world.

Since then, the population has expanded unchecked as Bangladesh is almost completely devoid of birth control methods.

However, disease and the massive cyclones and floods of a few years ago killed many thousands. The effects of the Bangladesh War, which took a heavy toll of the civilian population, are also unknown.
