  • Description

At Keelung Harbour, Taipei, Formosa, Sept 10, a warm welcome was given to 1,402 Chinese repatriates coming from Indonesia aboard the Japanese ship "Koan Maru".

As the ship approached the wharf, a welcoming crowd let off fire crackers in a typically Chinese welcome. There were huge banners and placards praising the repatriates' determined anti-Communist stand. The Chinese have had to leave Indonesia after the Indonesian Government banned aliens - mostly Chinese - from retail trade in the rural areas. In view of shrinking opportunities in the towns, many Chinese opted to return to their motherland - Communist China or Formosa. This has touched off a struggle between Peking and Taipei for the loyalty of the overseas Chinese in Indonesia.

The repatriates will be assisted by the Formosan Government to settle down permanently in the country they have never seen before, since almost all of them were born in Indonesia.
