The sit-in technically was illegal because although picketing is allowed, sit-in are not. However, Washington police allowed the college students to sit on the sidewalk. The ground was covered with about three inches of icy slush along Pennyslvania Avenue.

The 300-students stayed there for about four hours. The demonstration sponsored by the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee, will go on until the president takes the action they demand on renewed police violence in Alabama on Tuesday, March 16.
