  • Description

ITALIAN FASHION HOUSES HAVE BEEN SHOWING THEIR 1965-1966 AUTUMN - WINTER COLLECTIONS. AMONG THE FIRST WAS ONE OF THE LEADING DESIGNERS, EMILIO PUCCI, WHO SHOWED HIS LATEST CREATION IN FLORENCE ON SATURDAY.

PUCCI, WHO INTRODUCED STRETCH PANTS, BIZARRE PRINTS, AND GRACEFULLY SILK DRESSES THAT WEIGHED ONLY OUNCES, HAS SHOWED AGAIN HIS SUPREMACY OVER A WIDE FIELD...

TROUSER SUITS AND LOUNGING PYJAMAS ARE STILL POPULAR, THIS TIME WITH EVEN MORE EMPHASIS ON FLOWERED, ORNATE, ART NOUVEAU PRINTS AND DAZZLING FABRIC FEATURING A NEW DIMENSION IN ART FORMS TRANSLATED INTO FASHION -- WITH GRADUATING STRIPES, CLASHING COLOURS AND SWIRLING PATTERNS.

THE INSPIRATION FOR MUCH OF THE COLLECTION IS DESCRIBED AS COMING FROM THE MEDIEVAL COSTUMES OF THE PAGE BOYS. THE DESIGNER DESCRIBES IT AS "LONG LEGS AND TOPS, OR ALL TOPS AND LEGS, THAT'S ALL."
ANOTHER INFLUENCE WAS THE AMERICAN GEMINI SPACE PROJECT, AND MAJOR WHITE'S VENTURE IN SPACE. THIS WAS MOST PRONOUNCED IN THE HATS WORN BY THE MODELS. THESE WERE MOSTLY IN FELT AND FORMED AFTER THE STYLE OF A HELMET, CONCEALING ALL THE HAIR, WITH STRAPS PASSING UNDER THE CHIN. TO INDICATE THE FLOATING SENSE OF MOVEMENT, THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CLOTHES FOLLOWED THE CONTOUR OF THE BODY WITH NEAT, FLOWING, UNFITTING LINES.

SUITS WERE ALL IN WOOL, WITH JACKETS ALWAYS WORN OVER DRESSES. ALL THE JACKETS WERE REVERSIBLE, PROVIDING EITHER MATCHING OR CONTRASTING SHADES IN THE RANGE OF NATURAL COLOURS WHICH WERE MOST WIDELY FEATURED.

ALL THE COATS WERE ALSO REVERSIBLE, WITH VIOLENTLY CONTRASTING COLOURS. IN CUT THEY WERE DESIGNED TO ELONGATE THE FIGURE AND GIVE IT A FLOWING LOOK.

COLLARS WERE VERY IMPORTANT THROUGHOUT -- ALWAYS SMALL, RAISED AND CIRCULAR -- AGAIN DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM THE SPACE AGE SUIT.

FOR AFTERNOON AND COCKTAIL WEAR, SILK WAS POPULAR, WITH SKIRTS OFTEN CAUGHT IN ABOVE THE KNEE TO FORM WIDE, ORIENTAL-STYLE PANTALOONS. THIS STYLE WAS REPEATED IN THE EVENING WEAR, WITH FLOWING SKIRTS, WHICH WERE OFTEN CAUGHT AT THE HEM.
