  • Description

THIS BUSY THOROUGHFARE IN DJAKARTA IS PRESIDENT SUKARNO'S PRESTIGE AREA. AND IT IS HERE THAT AUSTRALIA'S NEW EMBASSY IS SITUATED -- ABOUT ONE MILE AWAY FROM THE PRESIDENT'S MERDEKA (FREEDOM) PALACE.

THE THOROUGHFARE, KNOWN AS DJALAN THAMRIN, IS WHERE FOREIGN DIPLOMATS HAVE THEIR OFFICES.

THE FIVE-STOREY BUILDING IS SCHEDULED TO OPEN ON JANUARY 26 BY THE AUSTRALIAN MINISTER OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS MR. PAUL HASLUCK.

SO WITH ABOUT A WEEK TO GO, AMBASSADOR MAXWELL LOVEDAY YESTERDAY (TUESDAY), TOURED THE BUILDING AND SAW INDONESIAN WORKERS PUTTING THE FINISHING TOUCHES.

THE EMBASSY HAS A 13-METRE SWIMMING POOL FOR ITS STAFF AND THEIR FAMILIES. THE GROUND FLOOR WILL HOUSE THE CONSULAR SECTION, THE FIRST, SECOND, THIRD AND FOURTH FLOORS WILL HOUSE THE TRADE COMMISSION, DIPLOMATIC STAFF, AND ARMED SERVICES ATTACHES AND THE GENERAL OFFICES RESPECTIVELY.

WORK ON THE EMBASSY STARTED IN 1963 -- THE YEAR PRESIDENT SUKARNO LAUNCHED CONFRONTATION AGAINST MALAYSIA. AUSTRALIA'S SUPPORT FOR MALAYSIA SAW A SLIGHT STRAIN IN THEIR DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH INDONESIA AND WORK WAS SHELVED FOR A PERIOD.

THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNED BY THE INDONESIAN DEPARTMENT OF WORKS, BUT THE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS WERE TRAINED BY AUSTRALIAN CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISORS HEADED BY MR. W. ZINN.
