Background: On Gasoline Alley at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the auto racing buffs are talking about a motor miracle that may be in the making... for ever-persistent Andy Granatelli. Granatelli's been trying to win at Indianapolis for the last 23 years.
Granatelli's turbines, which came within a whisker of winning the Memorial Day race the past two years, have been banned. Now Andy's trying a different power source. It's a modified 318 cubic inch Plymouth engine, the result of a crash development program that began just a little over three months ago. And that's the kind of miracle the fans are talking about. Normally it takes at least 20 months to develop a new racing engine.
Veteran Art Pollard, who drove a turbine last year, is piloting the new Granatelli car. Although the Plymouth 318 has never been used in racing, it's been proved successful in more than five million passenger cars in recent years. In his first practice runs at Indianapolis, Pollard has been tuning up with speeds topping 160 miles an hour. Right now work continues to prepare the car for qualifying time trials this weekend. Granatelli admits that the odds are against him. But once again he's trying something new and different... at Indianapolis.
