    President Joseph Mobutu returned home last Saturday (May 1) after his month-long tour of France, Japan and Taiwan. The President arrived in Kinshasa late on the Saturday afternoon and at a traditional homecoming rally, he outlined the achievements of his trip.

    He emphasised the theme of his country's economic independence and attacked those who, he said, had intrigued against Congo-Kinshasa. Referring to his visit to France, President Mobutu said his trip had been a considerable success. He said that as from June the Zaire, Congo-Kinshasa's national currency, would be quoted on the Paris stock exchange. He also told crowds in his address that business relations with Japan and Taiwan would be increasing.

    SYNOPSIS: In Congo-Kinshasa on Saturday a week ago, a large crowd waited to give President Joseph Mobutu a traditional welcome home after his month-long tour of France, Japan and Taiwan. President Mobutu made his tour in a bid to increase overseas trade with his country and to encourage foreign investment.

    Thousands waited in Kinshasa's 'Stadium of November Twenty-Fourth' to greet President Mobutu after it had been announced he would give an account of his trip to the people. He emphasised the theme of his country's economic independence in his opening address.

    Of his visit to France, President Mobutu told the people it had been a considerable success. He said a group of French businessmen would be arriving in Kinshasa later in May to examine the prospects of the Congolese market. He also pointed out that from the First of June, the Zaire -- Congo-Kinshasa's national currency -- would be quoted on the Paris stock exchange. In addition he said that future trade between Japan and Congo-Kinshasa would be direct, with no intermediaries.

    General Mobutu said his journey to Taiwan had been one of observation and experiment, especially in the sphere of agriculture.

    He told the people that the "discovery" of the Taiwan market would permit Congo-Kinshasa to reach the target of one million tons of rice and to become an exporter of maize. He added that Taiwan businessmen wold be visiting Kinshasa.
