    Denis James Killen entered Federal Parliament in 1955 at the age of 29, when he won the seat of Moreton, Queensland, at the general elections after the Member, Sir Josiah Francis, a former Minister for the Navy, was appointed Consul-General in New York.

    He retained the seat at successive general elections in 1958, 1961, 1966, 1972, 1974 and 1975.

    Mr. Killen was born on November 23, 1925 at Dalby, Queensland. Educated at Brisbane Grammar School, he later worked at a jackeroo.

    He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force and was discharged as a Flight Sergeant Air Gunner.

    In 1963 he was admitted to the Queensland Bar after graduating Bachelor of laws, as an external student at the University of Queensland. He specialised in criminal law and appeared in most jurisdictions, including the High Court.

    As a young politician Mr. Killen became Foundation President of the Young Liberals' Movement in Queensland. During 1952-56 he was Vice-President of the queensland Division of the Liberal Party.

    From February 1959 to November 1969 he was a member of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs. From February to August 1967 he was Assistant Government Whip. He was Minister for the Navy from November 12, 1969 to March 22, 1971.

    In Opposition, Mr. Killen was the spokesman for education 1973-75 and had responsibility for defence March-November 1975. He was sworn in as Minister for Defence on November 12, 1975 in the caretaker Ministry appointed following the dismissal of the Whitlam administration by the Governor-General Sir John Kerr, on November 11.

    He retained the portfolio of Defence in the Liberal-National Country Party Ministry sworn in on December 22, 1975.

    Mr. Killen is married and has three daughters. His recreations are tennis and racing.
