Background: A BIZARRE RELIGIOUS SECT LAUNCHED A PEACE MOVEMENT ON SUNDAY (14 DEC) AND IMMEDIATELY RAN INTO A STRANGE CONFRONTATION WITH THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE NAVY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MEKONG RIVER.

THE ANTI-WAR SECT OF 6,000 WHICH LIVES AS AN ISLAND COLONY UNDER ITS LEADER "COCONUT MONK" NGUYEN THANH NAM, ISSUED A CALL FOR AN UNCONDITIONAL AND PERMANENT CEASEFIRE ON FEBRUARY 5, 1970, THE DAY THE VIETNAMESE CELEBRATE TET (LUNAR NEW YEAR).

AT THE SAME TIME MORE THAN 300 FOLLOWERS SET SAIL IN A FREIGHTER IN AN ATTEMPT TO REACH CON SON ISLAND PRISON SOUTHEAST OF THE MAINLAND. THEY PLANNED TO BUILD A PEACE COLONY ON AN ADJOINING ISLAND.

BUT THREE GOVERNMENT GUNBOATS ORDERED THE FREIGHTER BACK. PERCHED ON 10 FOOT (THREE METRES) POLE IN THE BOAT, THE "COCONUT MONK" -- SO CALLED BECAUSE HE PREACHES A MIXTURE OF CHRISTIANITY AND BUDDHISM AFTER MEDITATION IN PALM TREES -- ORDERED IT TO TURN TO THE NEARBY TOWN OF MY THO, ABOUT 30 MILES SOUTHWEST OF SAIGON.

THE FREIGHTER WON THE GAME OF CAT AND MOUSE THAT FOLLOWED. EVENTUALLY PROVINCE POLICE CHIEF DO KIEN MOUI MOUNTED THE POLE ON THE MONK'S BOAT FOR NEGOTIATIONS. THEY AGREED THAT IF THE NAVY WOULD TOW THEM ON A TOUR AROUND THE RIVER NEAR MY THO, NO ONE WOULD ATTEMPT TO LAND. THEN CHEERING BROKE OUT AMONG THE FOLLOWERS OF THE "COCONUT MONK".
