  • Description

Senator Edward Kennedy arrived in Calcutta on Tuesday (10 August) to begin a two-day tour of the Indian border camps housing millions of East Pakistani refugees.

Mr. Kennedy, a leading critic of President Nixon's policy on the Bangladesh breakaway movement, was met at the Dum Dum airport by Siddartha Sarkar Ray, Central Minister in charge of West Bengal affairs. He told newsmen at the airport that he had come to Indian for the first time and that he hoped his visit would be productive and useful.

The Senator and his party went directly from the airport to the refugee camps followed by a heavy security guard. He was reported to have watched grim-faced as boatloads of refugees crossed into India from East Pakistan. (35,000 East Pakistani refugees still pour daily into India.)
