  • Description

Bahrain's first parliament was sworn in on Sunday (December 16) by the Emir (ruler), Sheik Isa Bin Sulman Al-Khalifa.

Thirty elected members of Parliament, chosen by about 30,000 male voters in a poll on December 7, took their seats in the municipal hall in Manama, the capital. They joined 14 Cabinet ministers, all appointed by the Emir.

The new Cabinet is the same as the previous one which was dissolved after the elections. There are two new ministers, one for the Interior, and one for Information. The Cabinet is headed by the Emir's brother, Sheik Khalifa Bin Sulman Al-Khalifa.

The first session of Parliament lasted two hours. If opened with prayers followed by a State-of-the-Nation address by the Emir, who called for a democratic constitution a year ago.

The Emir spoke of Bahrain's desires for progress in cooperation with the other Gulf states, and the country's commitment to the common causes of the Arab World--including the use of the "oil weapon".

Sheik Isa Bin Sulman said he had pinned his hopes for strengthening the basis of democracy in Bahrain on the new Parliament, which combined progressive and traditionalist political movements.
