SYNOPSIS: Thousands of children gathered in the ground of Hanoi Zoo on June first to celebrate International Children's Day. The occasion was a double celebration as the day was also the 30th anniversary of the Ho Chi Minh Pioneer Youth Movement.

The children paid their respects at the memorial to the late President Ho Chi Minh and laid special wreaths at the base of the statue erected in his memory.

The celebrations were presided over by the North Vietnamese President, Ton Doc Thang - now known to the children as "Uncle Ton". He urged the children to study, learn and play well to become good citizens.

After the preliminary speeches, the children staged a colourful parade through the grounds of the zoo. The North Vietnamese Pioneer Youth Movement was originally organised in 1941 and now boasts more than 600,000 adherents throughout the country.

Aspects of the Vietnam war were not forgotten in the children's parade. The shooting down and capture of American pilots and soldiers was portrayed by the children. The North Vietnamese Pioneer youth movement was originally known as the Ho Chi Minh Youth Scouts organisation. But the name was changed in February last year to comply with the wishes of the late President.

After the parade, Le Duan, First Secretary of the Vietnamese Labour Party, joined in the celebrations, and walked amongst the crowds of children and their parents.
