  • Description

THE DISCOVERY LAST YEAR BY TWO SPANISH POTHOLERS OF AN AMAZING DISPLAY OF PAELIOLITHIC ART IN A CAVE NEAR RIBADASELLA ON THE NORTHERN COAST OF SPAIN, HAS NOW BEEN DESCRIBED AS "OF MAJOR SIGNIFICANCE" AFTER A YEAR OF EXAMINATION. THE FULL IMPORT OF THE FIND WAS REALISED ONLY RECENTLY WHEN A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF THE PAINTINGS WAS PRESENTED BY PROFESSOR MAGIN BERENSUAR, OF THE SPANISH ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS.

IT IS STILL NOT CLEAR JUST HOW OLD THE PAINTINGS ARE, BUT THEY ARE SAID TO BE SOMETHING BETWEEN 15-THOUSAND AND 20-THOUSAND YEARS OLD. THE FIRST OF THE PAINTINGS ARE TO BE FOUND IN A CAVE ALMOST 400 FEET (APPROXIMATELY 120 METRES) BELOW GROUND.

THE PAINTINGS ARE FADED, AND THE COLOURS ARE MOSTLY RED, BLACK AND VIOLET. EXPERTS SAY THAT THE PREDOMINANCE OF REINDEER INDICATES THAT THE PAINTINGS ARE OF AN EARLIER DATE THAN THOSE FOUND AT ALTAMIRA, SOME CONSIDERABLE DISTANCE AWAY.

IT IS GENERALLY AGREED THAT THE CAVES WERE DECORATED FOR RITUAL OR MAGIC PURPOSES. THE INFORMATION THEY PROVIDE IS INVALUABLE. IT SHOWS THE BELIEFS OF THE PAELIOLITHIC HUNTERS, AND THE TYPES OF BEASTS WHICH ROAMED SOUTHERN EUROPE IN THE WAKE OF THE RETREATING ICE.
