  • Description

THE WORLD'S TOP GLIDER PILOTS ARE HAVING A DAY OFF FROM COMPETITION IN THE ELEVENTH WORLD GLIDING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LESZNO, WEST POLAND, TODAY (SATURDAY) AFTER YESTERDAY'S HIGH WINDS AND STORMS WHICH SWEPT MANY CONTESTANTS FAR OFF COURSE. NO OFFICIAL RESULTS HAVE SO FAR BEEN RELEASED FOR YESTERDAY'S EVENTS.

OFFICIALS HAD ANNULLED THE PERFORMANCES OF SIX PILOTS WHO FLEW ABOVE THE PERMITTED HEIGHT OF 2,000 METRES (6,562 FEET) IN DISTANCE RACES YESTERDAY, BUT AFTER PROTEST, ALLOWED THE DECISIONS TO STAND. THE ALTIMETERS OF THREE OF THE PILOTS -- MUSZCZYNSKI, FRITZ AND LOUGHRAN -- WERE REPORTED TO BE FAULTY.

FLYING CONDITIONS WERE SO DIFFICULT THAT NONE OF THE 100-STARTERS IN YESTERDAY'S COMPETITION REACHED THE SCHEDULED TURNING POINTS. THE COMPETITIONS HAVE BEEN ON FOR A WEEK, AND ARE DUE TO END NEXT WEEK.
