Background: Local fishermen and holiday makers in southern Japan have been struggling to save hundreds of dolphins from committing mass suicide. The dolphins swam ashore on Aoshima beach on Wednesday (6 January), but despite efforts to push them back in the water, although one theory is that they follow a leader whose brain and directional functions have deteriorated. Japanese fisherman have often been criticised for killing dolphins, but this week there was nothing but praise for their efforts to save the mammals. The bodies of the dead animals will be taken to university research departments in an attempt to find the cause of the dolphins' curious behaviour.
