  • Description

Spain's Joaquin Blume won the European championship in an artistic gymnastic competition at Pierre Coubertin Stadium in Paris today.

Remarkable was the Spaniard's performance on the rings and on the horse, and it was on the latter that he must have pipped the Russian, Yuri Titov, who also put on an amazing performance that was almost on a par with Blume's.

Joaquin Blume won with 57.20 points; and the Russian was second with 56.25 points. Titov stumbled when he landed after giving a fine demonstration on the horizontal bar, and this probably cost him the points which would have given him a win.

The holder of the world title for artistic gymnastics, Russia's Boris Chakline, was unable to take part in the competition owing to illness.

Switzerland's Beuliet did well on both the parallel bars and the horizontal.

But the palm really went to Blume who secured his points in six exercises including the parallel bars, fixed bar, rings, and saddle bow - he was actually placed first in four events - rings, pommel horse, parallel bars, and horizontal bar. He was second in the ground events and third in the horse jump.

A fair summing up would be that it was really a swings and round-abouts affair between the Spaniard and the Russian.
