  • Description

A 20-year-old Arab was shot dead during anti-Israeli riots which swept the occupied West Bank of the Jordan on Monday (17 May).

The youth, Adbala Mustafa Hawas, was shot when Israeli troops broke up a violent demonstration by 200 residents of the Kaindia refugee camp near Ramallah, north of Jerusalem. Israeli sources quoted by Reuters said an immediate investigation was opened into the shooting.

Hawas was buried the same day. Hundreds of mourners, many carrying Palestinian flags, marched through old and new Jerusalem as the coffin was carried from the youth's home village to the Kedron Valley cemetery where he was buried.

On the same day there were more violent disturbances in Nablus, north of Kalandia, as the whole town turned out to protest against the shooting of a 17-year-old girl the previous day (16 May).

On Tuesday (18 May) the rioting spread to East Jerusalem and other West Bank towns and Israeli security forces placed a curfew on several towns and Palestinian refugee camps. Most of the riots stem from Arab opposition to Israeli settlement on the West Bank.
