  • Description

AMERICANS SEVEN-LITRE FORDS ROARED THROUGH THE RAIN TO A ONE-TWO-THREE VICTORY IN THE LE MANS 24-HOUR RACE TODAY (SUNDAY). THEIR FEAT SMASHED THE SIX-YEAR DOMINATION AT LE MANS BY ITALIAN FERRARIS.

THE FORDS CAME IN OVER THE FINISHING STRAIGHT IN FORMATION - THE FIRST AND SECOND CARS SIDE BY SIDE. THE THIRD, A LENGTH BEHIND. THE OFFICIAL WINNERS: BRUCE MCLAREN AND CHRIS AMON OF NEW ZEALAND.

THE SECOND CAR HOME WAS PILOTED BY KEN MILES FROM HOLLYWOOD, AND DENNIS HULME, ANOTHER NEW ZEALANDER. THE THIRD PLACE WENT TO THE AMERICANS RONNIE BUCKNUM AND DICK HUTCHERSON.

THE RACE WAS ALSO A TRIUMPH FOR THE TWO-LITRE GERMAN PORSCHES WHICH TOOK THE FOUR PLACES AFTER THE FORDS. THE LEADING FERRARI FINISHED EIGHTH.

VICTORY WAS AWARDED TO THE MCLAREN-AMON TEAM BECAUSE ALTHOUGH THE FIRST TWO CARS CROSSED THE LINE AT THE SAME TIME, THE PAIR STARTED FURTHER BACK ON THE GRID YESTERDAY AND UNDER THE RACE RULES WON IN THE CASE OF A DEAD HEAT.
