  • Description

Member of the British Commonwealth Alliance "action" group assembled in London's Trafalgar Square on Sunday (1st November) to protest at the serious effect Britain's entry into the Common Market would have on the New Zealand economy.

The group believes that if Britain joins the Common Market without making special provisions for New Zealand products, that country will face "economic disaster". The meeting attracted little interest among passers-by, and contrasted with the previous weekend's violent demonstrations against Britain's proposal to supply arms to South Africa.

Three speakers, headed by Mr. A.J.F. Macdonald, told a small crowd of spectators that for 70 years New Zealand had moulded its economy to suit the British market, and had "even endured rationing, amidst plenty, so more food could be sent to the United Kingdom", during and after the war.
