The Queen Mother's personal standard flew over Government House Sydney today for the first time during her Australian visit. Seven thousand people crowded into the grounds of Government House for Her Majesty's last official function - a giant garden party. About 2000 of the guests arrived late because of the traffic tangle on the roads leading to Government House.
Among the first guests to arrive were the former Governor of New South Wales, Lieutenant General Sir John Northcott and his party.
For the garden party Her Majesty the Queen Mother wore a frock of delicate white lace with an enormous fichu collar at the back of which dropped a short train. Her hat was trimmed with royal blue and white osprey feathers.
Her Majesty mixed freely with the crowd and met many people with her unfailing smile and despite the heat and trying conditions. The crowd was so dense that as the Queen Mother left her umbrella above the heads was all that most people saw of her.
For the Queen Mother this was goodbye to Sydney. Soon she was to leave for Canberra and for the crowd today a final glimpse of her in the pose that has become characteristic....Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother smiling and waving farewell to the people of Sydney.
