In Tokyo another mammoth demonstration on July 2 in front of the Diet Building to demand the dissolution of the Diet (Parliament) and invalidation of the new Japan-U.S. Security Treaty.
Similar demonstrations were organised by the left-wing "Sohyo" Labour Federation in 14 other major cities throughout Japan, involving in all some 2,000,000 men and women.
This turn-out was described as the largest since the pact was ratified last month.
In Tokyo, about 200,000 persons including unionists and students carried huge placards and flags and chanted slogans as they demonstrated in front of the Diet and the Prime Minister's official residence. Prime Ministers Kishi has announced his intention to resign, but now the demonstrators want Kishi to resign "immediately".
And then the snake dance, which by now has become a favourite climax of all Tokyo demonstration and incidentally a big tourist attraction. Some reports say that Tokyo inhabitants have so used to these demonstrations and snake dancing that they would really be missing them once the situation was completely normalised!
