  • Description

Catalina aircraft, piloted by the Norwegian Airforce, have been used to deliver mail to expedition camps on the Svalbard islands, 400 miles north of Norway in the Artic Ocean. Unfortunately there is only one airfield there, built by the Germans during the second world war, which is too far from the camps. The letters will be dropped by parachute therefore.

There are two expeditions on the Svalbard islands, one is composed of Swedish and Swiss scientists, the other of Poles. Both expeditions are working on these snow-bound, freezing islands in connection with the geophysical year, and neither groups have received any mail for several months. In all over 4000 lbs of letters have been dropped to the expeditions.
