BUT THE ADDED: "WE ARE NOT READY TO YIELD OUR POSITION OR RELAX OUR DETERMINATION TO PRESERVE THE RIGHTS AND LIBERTIES OF THE PEOPLE OF WEST BERLIN."
    MR STEVENSON, WHO IS ON A ONE-DAY VISIT, VISITED THE EAST-WEST BERLIN BORDER, CALLING AT CHECKPOINT CHARLIE, THE AMERICAN SECTOR CROSSING POINT AT FRIEDRICHSTRASSE.

    WEST BERLINERS CHEERED AND WAVED WHEN MR STEVENSON WALKED UP TO THE WHITE LINE MARKING THE BORDER. A FEW METRES AWAY HE SAW THE CONCRETE AND STEEL BARRIER SET UP BY EAST GERMAN AUTHORITIES IN 1961, GUARDED BY ARMED TROOPS AND POLICE.
