Background: The new 2 1/2 ton truck, 8X8 truck is a member of the "intermediate duty" family of Army trucks. It has a 8-cylinder, 165 horsepower engine, and an 81 inch by 147 inch body. The term 8X8 means that power is transmitted through all 8 wheels.
The new truck has several advantages over the existing 2 1/2-ton trucks in that it has independent suspension on all wheels and high floatation tires, which give greater mobility. The truck is so constructed that it will float, even when loaded. When development is complete it will have a multi-fuel engine. All major components will be interchangeable with other members of the family - 6X6 and 4X4. The payload is 70 percent of the curb weight, which is 7,500 to 7,900 pounds. The new truck has about 50 percent better fuel mileage than current 2 1/2 ton trucks.
Chrysler Corporation, Detroit, Michigan, is the contractor for this truck.
