Location is Irish Army Barracks Galway City. The Minister for Defence Mr. Boland (plain clothes) is greeted by Coronel Austin Lawlor Officer Commanding Western Command. The Minister inspected a Guard of Honour under Lieutenant J. Kissane, after inspecting the Military Guard of Honour the Minister now inspects a Guard of Honour drawn from the Civil Defence Forces. This is the first time that a Civil Defence Force is established in the West of Ireland and on this occasion the Minister for Defence is formally opening the New Training Centre. The Local Civil now give a demonstration of rescue work from a bombed damaged house. The Mayor of Galway Mr. Peter Grean was also present at the demonstration. The Civil Defence Force in Galway City has just over one hundred recruits of which fifty of these are young girls, the recruits ages being from eighteen to sixty two years. They work in close corporation with The Irish Red Cross Society, The Order of Malta Society and the local Fire Fighting Service. Captain P.B. Sugrue is Civil Defence Officer for Galway.
