ALSO COUPLED WITH THE STRIKERS' DEMANDS ON THE GOVERNMENT WAS A DEMAND TO SUSPEND THE COMPULSORY SAVINGS SCHEME AND TO EASE CURRENT TAXATION.

    SHIPPING IN BOMBAY HARBOUR CAME TO A COMPLETE STANDSTILL.BUSES WERE ALSO HALTED.TAXES STAYED ON THEIR RANKS, BUT TRAINS AND PLANES KEPT TO THEIR SCHEDULES.

    POLICE WERE OUT IN FORCE TO GUARD INSTALLATIONS, BUT THE ATMOSPHERE STAYED CALM.YESTERDAY'S GENERAL STOPPAGE CLIMAXED A SERIES OF STRIKES IN THE PORT CITY.SOME 30,000 MUNICIPAL WORKERS HAVE BEEN OUT FOR MORE THAN 10 DAYS IN A BID TO WIN HIGHER LIVING ALLOWANCES.THE DOCKERS AND TAXI MEN STRUCK FOR 30 HOURS IN SYMPATHY.
