Background: ON THE SECOND DAY OF THE LONDON TO NEW YORK AIR RACE, CONTESTANTS TODAY (MONDAY) CONTINUED TO DEPART AND ARRIVE FROM AND AT LONDON'S POST OFFICE TOWER. AMONG THEM, SQUADRON LEADER THOMAS LECKY-THOMPSON, WHO PILOTED THE ROYAL AIRFORCE ENTRY -- A HAWKER SIDDELEY VERTICAL TAKE-OFF JUMP JET.

AMONG THE FIRST ARRIVALS THIS MORNING FROM NEW YORK, WAS U.S. NAVY WING COMMANDER MARTIN -- WHO MADE HIS DASH INTO THE GPO TOWER BLINDFOLDED.

SQUADRON LEADER LECKY-THOMPSON MADE A RUN FROM THE TOWER TO A WAITING HELICOPTER WHICH FLEW HIM TO A DISUSED GOODS YARD BEHIND LONDON'S ST. PANCRAS RAILWAY STATION, WHERE THE HARRIER WAS WAITING IN READINESS FOR TAKE-OFF. IN AN EARLIER PRACTICE LANDING AND TAKE-OFF FROM THIS LOCATION, THE V/STOL RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT MADE AVIATION HISTORY BY BEING THE FIRST AIRCRAFT EVER TO LAND IN THE HEART OF THE CITY.

THE PILOT'S RUN FROM THE HELICOPTER TO THE AIRCRAFT WAS MADE SLIGHTLY MORE HAZARDOUS BY THE HUGE CLOUD OF COAL DUST BEING CHURNED UP BY BOTH THE HELICOPTER'S COPPERS AND THE HARRIER'S DOWN-THRUST JETS.

THE RAF IS HOPING TO BEAT THE TRADITIONAL RIVALS, THE ROYAL NAVY, WHO YESTERDAY BROKE THE TRANSATLANTIC RECORD BY MAKING THE RUN FROM NEW YORK IN 5 1/2 HOURS.

AFTER A PERFECT VERTICAL TAKE-OFF, SQUADRON LEADER LECKY-THOMPSON, HEADED WEST OVER THE ATLANTIC. NO TIME IS WASTED BY ANY OF THE ARMED SERVICES JETS -- LIKE THE HARRIER, THEY REFUEL IN MIDAIR SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE OCEAN. A FAR CRY FROM THE HISTORIC CROSSING FIFTY YEARS AGO BY ALCOCK AND BROWN -- THE EVENT THAT THIS RACE, SPONSORED BY BRITAIN'S "DAILY MAIL" NEWSPAPER IS COMMEMORATING.
