Background: The 22nd session of the Lake Chad Basin Commission met on Friday (17 December) to discuss the implementation of agricultural projects. These are designed to save lives in any future drought.
SYNOPSIS: The meeting was held in Chad's capital, N'djamena, at the Congressional Palace. Attending the conference were members of the High Military Council, provisional government officials and members of the diplomatic corps. Chad's Planning Minister, Kerim Togoi, presided over the meeting. Mr. Togoi said, if all the projects had been fulfilled as they had wanted, many lives could have been saved. Delegates from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroun, whose countries are badly affected by drought were also present.
Mr. Togoi went on however to praise many outside organisations for their contributions to the improvement of drought affected areas. He made special mention of the assistance given by the United Nations Development Programme and the Food and Agricultural Organisation.
