    ISRAELI AND SYRIAN REPRESENTATIVE YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) MET IN AM OLD CUSTOMS SHED TO TRY AND BRING PEACE TO THEIR TENSE BORDER AREA. THE MEETING - AND EXTRAORDINARY SESSION OF THE ISRAEL - SYRIA MIXED ARMISTICE COMMISSION - WAS THE FIRST DIRECT CONTACT BETWEEN REPRESENTATIVES OF THE TWO COUNTRIES IN EIGHT YEARS.

    THE MEETING WAS SUGGESTED BY THE UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL, U THANT, AND ITS AIM WAS TO SEEK PRACTICAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR DISPUTES OVER CULTIVATION OF LAND IN THE DEMILITARISED ZONE IN THE FRONTIER AREA. THIS WAS THE SCENE OF VIOLENT CLASHES EARLIER THIS MONTH.

    THE NEGOTIATORS MET IN THE FORMER CUSTOMS SHED ON THE SYRIAN SIDE OF THE BORDER, ON ONE SIDE OF A BRIDGE ACROSS THE JORDAN RIVER KNOWN AS JISR BANAT YACOUB, THE DAUGHTERS OF JACOB.

    YESTERDAY, EVERYTHING WAS QUIET AND SERENE ALONG THE BORDER. THE ISRAELI DELEGATES WERE MET AT THE BRIDGE BY UNITED NATIONS MILITARY OBSERVERS AND SYRIAN OFFICERS AND ESCORTED IN CONVOY TO THE SYRIAN SHED.

    CHAIRMAN OF THE MEETING WAS LIEUTENANT-GENERAL ODD BULL, OF NORWAY, CHIEF OF STAFF OF THE U.N. TRUCE SUPERVISION ORGANISATION.
