Background: One hundred and eighty men of Belgium's Liberation Battalion, commanded by General Cheysen, were flown in to Brussels Airport by American Globemaster planes Aug 31.
They were the last contingent of Belgian operational troops scheduled to leave the Congo, although 1,500 technical personnel remain on bases at Kitona and Kamina and some troops have moved to Ruanda Urundi Protectorate
Before leaving Elizabethville, in the Congo's Katanga Province, the soldiers were addressed by Katanga Minister of the Interior, Mr. Munongo. "You came swiftly in answer to our appeal, when panic reigned in Katanga. Words cannot express our gratitude. I thank you from the bottom of my heart."
