    Background: WARSAW, POLAND

Poland's young people have been urged by that country's communist leadership to forget ideas of replacing the socialist system, and to work instead for a strong, just and safe state. The leadership said the leadership said the anti-socialist ideas were spread among Poland's youth while the Solidarity Trade Union was active during 1980-81. General Wojciech Jaruzelski, head of the ruling military council, told a party central committee meeting that the authorities sincerely sought an understanding with youth. He told the meeting the young people's bitterness and their striving for change had been the main force behind, what he called, the impetuosity of Solidarity. The Martial law ruler said it was a great tragedy for Polish society that youthful romanticism and readiness for sacrifice were exploited for a political gamble.
