  • Description

Austrians continued their unexpected domination of this year's international, four-course ski-jumping competition when Carl Schnabl won the event at the new Olympic jump at Innsbruck on Friday (3 January).

The new Bergisel jump has just been completed in preparation for the Twelfth Olympic Games, which will be held in Innsbruck in 1976. This was the first time that the jump had been used in a competition.

The 19-year-old Austrian, who also won the second contest at Garmisch-Patenkirohen, West Germany, two days ago, set a new course record of 100 metres on his second jump. He reached 99 metres in his first attempt and scored a total of 239.6 points for distance and style.

His compatriot Willi Puerstl, who won the opening contest at Oberstdorf in West Germany, and came fifth at Garmisch and Innsbruck, held his lead in the overall standings.

Edi Federer -- also of Austria -- came second at Innsbruck with 233.3 points (jumps of 98.5 and 96 metres) and countryman Hans Wallner took third place with 231.3 points (jumps of 96 and 98.5 metres).

Karel Kodejska of Czechoslovakia was the only foreigner to penetrate the Austrian phalanx by finishing fourth with 226.4 points (jumps of 97 and 96.5 metres).

The final contest of the series -- in which more than 80 skiers are taking part -- is scheduled for Bischofshofen in Austria on Monday (6 January).
