  • Description

Thousands of Cypriots flocked into Famagusta, July 8, to take part in a great 3-day youth festival, organized by the island's left wing unions and federations. A big parade marched through the crowded city streets to the stadium carrying banners proclaiming "Peace, Friendship, Democracy - down with War" and "No new Hiroshima".

At the stadium hundreds of boys and girls danced in gaily coloured national dress and were enthusiastically cheered by a vast crowd.

On the last day of the celebrations - held to express the wish for peace and democracy throughout the world - the large, flag-carrying procession marched from the stadium to the centre of the town where many people addressed the crowds, including the Mayor, Mr. Pouyouros.

Personalities invited to the festival included the consuls of Yugoslavia and Israel and a representative of the World Democratic Union, Mrs. Louciana Kastellina.
