Background: Wildly cheering crowds welcomed King Hussein of Jordan all along the route during a day-long tour Aug 4 of Tobas, Jenin and Nablus - Jordan towns bordering Israel. He was accompanied by Premier Hazza Majali.

Within sight of the Israeli-Jordanian border, the King visited the Faraah refugee camp, housing Arabs displaced when Israel became a nation ten years ago. Their pressing need for resettlement, and the Arab League's insistence that they be allowed back to their old homesteads, has created a perpetual friction liable to explode in all-out war between Israel and the Arab world.

This tour - he has rarely crossed the River Jordan into the part of Palestine joined to his country following the end of world war two - is viewed as a sign of royal confidence in the people's increasing loyalty.

The King's visit follows his Aug 2 statement that Jordan considers Israel a "danger threatening our existence, and we shall fight against any aggression that comes from her against any party of the Arab world."
Political observers viewed the King's words in line with recent moves by Arab nations to increase their policy of hostility towards the ten-year old Republic of Israel. The King's reply also indicated Jordan's return to participation in Arab affairs at a time when the Arab nations are planning to improve unity. The Arab League council of ministers meet in Casablanca September 1.

The UAR reopened its threats against Israel last week. President Nasser told a meeting: We are all awaiting the decisive battle to get rid of Israel and the crime of its creation.

Diplomatic relations between the UAR and Jordan are to be re-established this month following the reopening of the Jordanian border with the UAR's Syria.
