Israeli Defence Minister, Moshe Dayan, has visited his forces 10-miles (16 kms) inside Egyptian territory. General Dayan, who crossed the Suez Canal on Thursday (18 October), predicted that the war would be over in a matter of days.
He added that the continually widening bridgehead of men, tanks and other vehicles will remain inside Egypt "until the war is over".
This film, from the Israeli Broadcasting Authority, was censored by the Israeli Authorities. It shows heavy convoys of armoured vehicles reportedly inside Egyptian territory with heavy air force cover. There are also scenes of troops advancing and tanks engaged in battle. Among the captured and destroyed Egyptian weaponry shown is a Russian-built SAM 2 rocket.
The Israelis claim that scores of Egyptian tanks have been destroyed and that the Egyptians, who crossed to the East Bank of Suez two weeks ago, have been confined to a narrow strip.
The Israeli thrust across the Canal, launched four days ago, as a "ghost operation", is now claimed as a large-scale assault - reinforced and firmly established. But General Dayan gave a clue to Israeli casualties when he said "I am very satisfied with the results, but there is no shutting of our eyes to the heavy price we are paying".
The Israeli push is reported to be a daring bid to cut off the Egyptians on the East Bank. As the Israeli forces fan aid from their bridgehead, they hope to trap Egyptians already across the strip of water, according to strategists. The Egyptians would then face the main armoured strength of the Israelis in Sanai with the expeditionary forces behind them.
The Egyptians, however, predict the liquidation of the Israeli force on the West Bank which, they say is encircled.
