Background: In Italy, the new pope, John Paul the Second was formally installed as Bishop of Rome on Sunday (12 November), when he took possession of the city's Cathedral church, the Basilica of St. John Lateran.

SYNOPSIS: Each public appearance of the new Pope has attracted thousands of cheering spectators, and Sunday's journey in an open car through the streets of Rome was no exception. Although the Pope stressed in a recent speech that the Roman Catholic Church was not connected to any political community, he paused on his way to the Basilica to meet members of the city council.

The Pope was greeted by the Mayor of Rome, Signor Guilio Carlo Argan and other members of the Communist-led council, in the Square at the foot of the Capitol Hill. After handing over the keys to the city, Mayor Argan said his Communist administration would respect the separation of religious and civil authority as past Christian Democrat councils had done. He added that Rome was an unhappy city with many social problems.

In his reply the Pope reaffirmed the importance he attached to becoming Bishop of Rome. He recently described the Ministry of this diocese, as being the root of the universality of the Church. The Pope's journey was a poignant reminder of his predecessor, John Paul the First, who travelled the same route seven weeks ago, only five days before he died of a heart attack. Pope John Paul continued to the Basilica where he broke with tradition, waving to the thirty thousand strong crowd from a balcony of the Lateran Palace.
