BLAKEY: "The announcement that the summer games would go ahead on time in Montreal was made in the conference hall at Innsbruck where the winter games are due to open on Wednesday. The International Olympic Committee, the IOC, spent the last two days listening to assurance by the Canadians that the Montreal games will take place on time in a modified stadium. With just five and half months to go, the IOC said it's convinced that whatever the problems, the games will start on time. Lord Killanin told the committee that cities which organise the games must not be encouraged to run into wasteful extravagance. The Montreal games look like costing 500-million pounds. He also said that in future, governments must give financial guarantees. The man who convinced the IOC that Montreal could make it was Dr. victor Goldbloom, a minister in the Quebec provincial government."

DR. GOLDBLOOM: "The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Therefore what we say here in formulating our questions or in providing our answers will not really have a significant bearing on the ultimate outcome. It is the accomplishment that will be the determining factor. To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, I believed the world will little note nor long remember...

..what we say here but it will remember if the games in Montreal come off satisfactorily and with dignity and with efficiency and this is what we are committed to do."

Background: Doubts about the Olympic Games starting on time have ben officially set aside. The full International Olympic Committee accepted a Canadian promise on Monday (2 february) that the summer games centre in Montreal... or most of it...will be ready well before starting date in July.

The IOC met in Innsbruck where the winter olympics begin later this week. The man who convinced the IOC that Montreal could make it was Dr. Victor Goldbloom, a minister in the Quebec provincial government.

He told the committee that the proof of the pudding was in the eating. He insisted questions and answers would have no significant bearing on the ultimate outcome, only accomplishment will be the determining factor.

He said the world will little note nor longer remember what was being discussed at the meeting but it will remember if the games in Montreal come off satisfactorily and with dignity.

The Minister added that this was hat Canada was committed to do.

The IOC spent the last two day listening to such assurances by the Canadians.

And with just five and a half months to go, the IOC said it was convinced that whatever the problems, the games will start on time.
