TRANSCRIPT: PRESIDENT REAGAN AT SEQUENCE 2: "Those who know him testify that he is a man with character and common-sense, affable, yet decisive. He is a man who inspires confidence and leaves no doubt that he is capable of the vital task that we're giving him. Above all the responsibilities of the presidency, shaking, shaping American foreign policy is the most awesome. It's in this arena that we come to grips with the decisions that most directly affect the delicate balance of peace, which secures both the immediate and long-term well-being of the United States. I look forward to his council and, with all of that said, George, welcome to the team." (4 shots) 0.51

And I certainly want to approach this task fully conscious and realistic about the problems, but even more conscious of the opportunities which, with creative and constructive effort, we may be able to do something wonderful with, I thank you very much, Mr. President, and my friends." Background: Former industrialist and college professor George Schultz was sworn in on July 16 as United States Secretary of State. Taking the oath of office in Washington, at a ceremony attended by President Reagan in the White House rose garden, Mr. Schultz pledged to pursue a foreign policy that would command national support. He succeeds Alexander Haig, who resigned on June 25 because of policy differences with other Reagan administration officials. The 61-year-old Secretary of State, whose nomination was unanimously confirmed by the Senate, had previously been President Richard Nixon's Secretary of Labour, Budget Director, and Treasury Secretary.
