The outspoken Christian Maronite leader's car was attacked by gunmen in a northern Lebanese village on Tuesday. It was the second assassination attempt on Mr. Edde this week. On Sunday Falangist militia shelled a meeting the 63-year-old lawyer was addressing in another northern town.

The assassination attempts mark the first rightist feuding in Beirut since civil war erupted in the Lebanon 13 months ago.

Hospital officials say Mr. Edde is comfortable and in good spirits following visits by his family and several friends. The shooting has delayed peace talks between the rival rightist factions. It's believed Mr. Edde was on his way to a meeting with Falangist leader Pierre Gemayel when the attempt on his life took place.
