• Short Summary

Mr. J. Burke Knapp, vice president of the World Bank, inspected the huge Kariba Dam?

  • Description

Mr. J. Burke Knapp, vice president of the World Bank, inspected the huge Kariba Dam on the Rhodesia-Zambia border yesterday (Friday). He looked over the hydro electric installations with officials of the Central African Power Corporation and flew over the dam wall and part of the vast Kariba Lake. Later Mr. Knapp said he assumed the dam was reasonably safe.

The Central African Power Corporation controls the dam and its installations for the two Rhodesian and Zambian governments. The corporation still owes the World Bank GBP26 million sterling of the GBP32 million sterling that the World Bank loaned it to help build the dam. Britain is the ultimate guarantor for the loan.

While Mr. Knapp was inspecting the dam, a Rhodesian Air Force plane flew overhead and he saw Rhodesian soldiers building a sandbag gun emplacement at the Rhodesian end.

On his four-day visit to Rhodesia, Mr. Knapp had what he called "a very interesting and very cordial conversation" with Mr. Ian Smith.
