SYNOPSIS: In Lagos, Nigeria, prominent scientists gathered on Tuesday to exchange views on latest developments in the campaign against sleeping sickness.

Dr Adetoro arrived to open the conference. He's Nigeria's Federal Commissioner for Agriculture and National Research and has a special interest in conquering the killer disease, which annually costs his country over a million pounds with its ravages to humans and livestock.

Dr. Adetoro in his opening address called for a concerted effort by all member countries of the Organisation of African Unity to eradicate sleeping sickness and allied diseases. He declared that the disease denied his country many of its richest areas for raising much-needed animal protein, and it also caused suffering to hundreds of people.

The five-day conference was being sponsored by the Scientific, Technical and Research Commission of the Organisation of African Unity. Besides the African countries represented, there are a number of leading scientists from Europe and the United States. Proposals are expected for joint action in selected areas of Africa.
