  • Description

IN JAPAN THE VISIT OF ANOTHER UNITED STATES NUCLEAR SUBMARINE HAS SPARKED OFF NATION-WIDE DEMONSTRATIONS. THIS TIME THE VESSEL IS THE U.S.S. PERMIT, NOW BERTHED AT SASEBO NAVAL BASE NEAR NAGASAKI CITY.

THE DEMONSTRATIONS - ATTENDED BY MANY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE AT SASEBO - ARE AGAINST THE PRESENCE OF NUCLEAR-POWERED VESSELS IN JAPAN, AGAINST UNITED STATES FOREIGN POLICY IN ASIA, AND AGAINST A NUMBER OF GRIEVANCES HELD BY LEFT-WING GROUPS IN THE COUNTRY. BANNERS CARRIED BY THE DEMONSTRATORS CALLED FOR THE WITHDRAWAL OF UNITED STATES FORCES FROM VIETNAM, THE END OF THE USE OF JAPANESE PORTS AS BASES "FOR AGGRESSION IN VIETNAM" - AND EVEN EXPRESSED SUPPORT FOR SOUTH KOREAN STUDENTS WHO HAVE RECENTLY BEEN PROTESTING AT THE TREATY WHICH ESTABLISHED NORMAL RELATIONS BETWEEN TOKYO AND SEOUL.

DESPITE THE DEMONSTRATIONS - AND THE ANGRY SPEECHES AT A NUMBER OF RALLIES, THE CREW OF THE U.S.S. PERMIT HAVE SPENT MANY HOURS IN THE SASEBO SHOPPING AREA, AND HAVE NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN ANY INCIDENTS WITH THE DEMONSTRATORS.

THE DEMONSTRATORS CLAIM THEY FEAR THAT JAPAN WILL BECOME INVOLVED IN THE VIETNAM DISPUTE IF IT CONTINUES TO ALLOW AMERICAN NAVAL VESSELS TO USE JAPANESE PORTS AS BASES.
