President Bourguiba has returned to Tunisia after spending two months in Europe. Large crowds turned out to welcome him as he drove through the capital on Thursday (31 August).
SYNOPSIS: The return of the President was marked by a public holiday. The streets were crowded as the people turned the event into a celebration which replaced the traditional birthday holiday on August 3rd which the President missed this year for the first time in 22 years.
The President who is 75, has spent two months abroad; first in Geneva and then in Paris. During that time he underwent medical tests.
Although the President made no formal announcement on his return, it had already been announced that the European doctors found him to he in an excellent state of health.
The next big event for President Bourguiba will be celebrations marking the foundation of the country's only political party, the PSD, the Parti Socialiste Destourion, on September 3rd. Now that President Bourguiba has returned, observers expect a cabinet reshuffle to be announced shortly. But for the moment, politics has given way to the nation's welcome to their leader.
